A Turn-Up
I got curious how Minnesota is doing in the second wave of the virus that is afflicting states to our south and west. One metric looks good, but another points to possible trouble a few weeks hence.
Here are the daily counts of Minnesota deaths from Covid-19 since the disease first appeared in the state. The numbers and the 7-day running average continue to trend in the right direction.
Now for the worrisome part. The graph below shows daily hospitalizations. There is a pretty clear upturn, which if it continues may look like the start of a second wave in this state — and be reflected in the death statistics by mid-July.
[ Note added 2020-07-01: ] With a further six days’ worth of data, the upturn was not sustained. Hospitalizations turned down again, and (as expected) the 7-day average of deaths took an upward jump but also has turned down. In these graphs, the purple line marks the end of data from the original post, above.
